Planetary Community Chicken Project

Project principles

A metaphor for building resilient communities
The Planetary Community Chicken (PCC) project was launched in 2016, it connects global diversity with local identity and productivity.
The principles are simple: a rooster from the latest generation of artist Koen Vanmechelen's Cosmopolitan Chicken Project is paired with a local commercial hen within a selected community. The offspring combines the genetic pool of the rooster and the hen to produce a more resilient productive bird for the local communities. The Planetary Community Chicken is not only a source of nutrition and income for its host communities, it injects biodiversity, provides a platform for education and research, and builds connections with others and with the world.
Since the first Planetary Community Chicken hatched in Sint Truiden in December 2016, the project has developed into a global network of people that, united through the chicken, work on sustainable food, healthy societies and socio-ecological resilience.

Projects are made possible through the energy and efforts of our local partner organizations, our strategic, operational and scientific partners and the financial support of our sponsors.
